2026 DII Baseball World Series Preview

The road to Cary has finally reached its destination. Welcome to the 2026 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship! After a grueling regular season and a fiercely competitive regional and super-regional gauntlet, only eight elite programs remain standing at the USA Baseball National Training Complex with their eyes set on college baseball's ultimate prize.

This year’s field features a spectacular mix of seasoned blue-bloods, returning powerhouses, and hungry newcomers ready to rewrite the history books.

Bracket 1 is a gauntlet of momentum and resilience. It is headlined by the red-hot No. 1 seed West Chester, but the Golden Rams will have to navigate a stacked lineup that features last year's national runner-up in No. 4 Central Missouri, a surging South Central juggernaut in No. 5 UT Tyler, and a gritty No. 8 UIndy squad that has made a habit of surviving and advancing when their backs are against the wall.

Over in Bracket 2, history is on the line. No. 2 seed Tampa arrives looking to accomplish something no DII program has ever done: a National Championship three-peat. Standing in their way is a formidable slate including No. 3 Catawba, a team that simply does not lose weekend series; No. 6 Point Loma, hoping their "even-year" magic strikes gold once again; and No. 7 Bentley, a program enjoying a season of historic firsts and looking to play the ultimate spoiler.

With the action kicking off today, let's break down the brackets, highlight the impact players, and explore exactly what it will take for each of these eight programs to hoist the national championship trophy. All games can be streamed with live stats on ncaa.com Bracket 1:No.1 seed West Chester

No.4 seed Central MissouriNo.5 seed UT TylerNo.8 seed UIndy

Bracket 2:No.2 seed TampaNo.3 seed Catawba

No.6 seed Point Loma

No.7 seed UIndy No.1 seed West Chester One of the more dominant runs through the regional, this West Chester has shown their strength with a 44-10 record, finishing 14-2 to end the regular season. That continued into the postseason, as they outscored their opponents by 45 runs (67 runs scored to 22 runs allowed). In the shThey’ll take on No.8 seed UIndy at 6 PM ET on Friday, May 29th. It all starts at the top of the order with Carter Rust, who has been golden for the Golden Rams. In 29 postseason plate appearances, Rust is slashing .478/.586/.826 with a pair of doubles and home runs. His 11 hits are leading the team this postseason. He’s hitting .355 with 29 stolen bases this season. The team is driving in runners in a multitude of ways, as four different players have had 8 or more RBI since the regionals began. One of those four is Caleb Strawhecker, who is hitting .450 this postseason (also leading the team in hitting at .359 on the season). With 9 hits and 8 RBI. The presence on the mound is known as an ace who can compete with anybody in the field. Julian Costa, who on the season is 12-2 with a 2.63 ERA and 74 strikeouts to 19 walks in 83 innings. Matter of fact, he’s been slightly better in the postseason with a 2.45 ERA over 11 innings. HOW THE GOLDEN RAMS COULD WIN THE NATIONAL TITLE:West Chester rolls in as one of the hottest teams in DII Baseball. In their last 25 games, they are 21-4, outscoring their opponents by 142 runs and an average of nearly six per game. Julian Costa gets you as close to possible a certainty of a win when he throws.

No.8 seed UIndy Many thought that this team should not have made a regional, let alone make it to Cary. After losing on a walk-off home run in the Springfield Regional, UIndy (39-22) rattled off four straight wins to go to the supers, just to sweep top seed Grand Valley State at their place. Al Ready just knows how to lead his team to victories, as the Greyhounds will make their 3rd appearance in the last four years to Cary. UIndy will begin World Series play Friday, May 29th at 6 PM ET against West Chester. The UIndy offense was one of the toughest to get out in the regionals and supers, as they scored at least six in each game and ten or more runs in five of the seven games they played. The Greyhounds sported a .506 on-base percentage in the postseason, bonkers. Nobody did it better than GLVC Player of the Year Austin Bode, who had 11 hits and 10 RBI but had an impressive 15 walks in 42 plate appearances. Bode has slashed .404/.528/.803 with 19 HR and 73 RBI this season. His on-base percentage in the regionals and supers was an astounding .619! His 10 RBI this postseason is tied with three others in Gavin Duran (who also leads the team with 15 hits), Bret Perry, and Chase Mason.  While the offense had put up video game numbers, the pitching staff did enough to keep the Hounds in the game. Aidan Pearson and Drake Downing collectively have pitched 28.2 innings this postseason with an ERA in the 5.6 range. Given the way UIndy had to escape the regionals after losing the first game, the staff is ready to have their name called whenever, wherever.

HOW THE GREYHOUNDS CAN WIN THE NATIONAL TITLE

UIndy comes in winning six straight games to make their way to Cary. The team just finds ways to win. So as long as the offense continues to put up big numbers, there’s no reason to see the Greyhounds run through the bracket, as they are 21-3 when they score 10 or more runs. No.4 seed Central Missouri What may seem as a “down year” in terms of the regular season and MIAA Tournament, the Mules found their way back to Cary despite not winning the MIAA Regular Season for the first time since 2018. The end of the regular season and MIAA Tournament weren’t kind to the Mules, losing two of the last three weekend sets and going one-and-done in the MIAA Tournament. However, that didn’t stop UCM (39-15) in the regionals and super regionals, as they rattled off five straight wins to punch their ticket back to Cary.Central Missouri will play Friday, May 29th at 1:30 PM ET against UT Tyler. For the Mules, they have a bonafide ace in Sawyer Allen. Over 82.1 innings, the Platte City, Missouri Native has posted an 8-1 record with a 2.08 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP. In two starts totaling 15 innings in the regionals and supers, Allen had a 0.60 ERA, including a 9-inning complete game in the Supers against Augustana. Also in the postseason, Treyton DesLauriers has 7.2 innings without allowing an earned run in two starts. He carries a 2.86 ERA over 28.1 innings so far.The bullpen has also been nails, especially Sam Wyrick. He hasn’t allowed an earned run in 7.1 innings. On the season, Wyrick has a 3.76 ERA.

Overall, both the starters (1.20 ERA) and bullpen (1.29 ERA) have been lights out. As a staff, the team hasn’t allowed more than three runs all postseason.

On offense, the postseason leader so far is Evan Vienhage, who is hitting .500 with 10 hits. He’s hitting .369 on 69 at-bats on the season. Grant Hollister is second on the team with 47 RBI, eight of those came in the postseason. In Game 1 of the supers, “G” hit a grand slam. Chase Wilcox leads the team with a .367 average and looks to be a contributor in Cary. HOW THE MULES CAN WIN THE NATIONAL TITLE

The Mules have the experience with 22 World Series appearances. They were the national runner-up a season ago. They are amongst the best pitching staffs this postseason. They tied for 2nd in the country in fielding percentage (.980). They are third in DII in stolen bases (189). They have a path with their excellent pitching and defense, and can wreak havoc getting on base and winning the baserunning battle with any team in the field. Should it go in their favor, they have a chance to finish the job in 2026. No.5 seed UT Tyler Welcome to the new perennial power in the South Central Region, as the UT Tyler Patriots have now gone to back-to-back trips to the DII World Series. It felt like utter dominance for the 48-12 Patriots, as they won both the Lone Star Regular Season and Tournament Title. In that process they had to beat Angelo State four times, and No.1 team in the country, Colorado Mesa twice. Like West Chester, UT Tyler is 21-4 in their last 25 games. The Patriots will play Friday, May 29th, at 1:30 PM ET against Central Missouri.Offensively, the team has gotten the 2025 version of Drew Schmidt this postseason, as he has 14 hits in 29 at-bats. Schmidt in 2025 hit .410, so far this postseason he’s hitting .438.Connor Clark is hitting .370 this postseason and is 35-for-41 on stolen base attempts this season. In the run producing and power department, it’s been Kaston Mason. Five of his eight hits this postseason have been for extra bases and he has delivered 13 RBI. His performance has catapulted him to 2nd on the team with 61 RBI.Pitching wise, the staff has relied upon Dylan Blomquist (2.70 ERA in 10 postseason innings) and Coleson Abel (3.46 ERA in 13 postseason innings). Abel threw 8.1 innings of 3-run ball against Angelo State in the regional. Blomquist shut out the Rams on the same day as Abel to advance to the Supers. Although he struggled a bit, UT Tyler’s ace Julio Garcia leads the team with a 3.18 ERA and an 8-4 record to boot. HOW THE PATRIOTS CAN WIN THE NATIONAL TITLE Since 2017, every National Champion has won either the Regular Season (Tampa’s conference, the SSC, has no tournament) or the Conference Tournament. UT Tyler has done both. The Patriots went to Cary for the first time last season, so this will be more of a business trip. They have the offense for the big hits, and the backend to get big outs. No.2 seed Tampa

Tampa has the opportunity to do something that no team has ever done before. Three-peat. Tampa took a clean sweep of regionals and supers to get back to Cary, going 5-0 and allowing less than 4 runs per game in the process, now sitting at 46-8 on the season. The Spartans will play on Saturday, May 30th at 6 PM ET against Bentley. The Spartans have the best ERA in the country and likely the best ERA by rotation. Robert Satin is likely to take the ball in Game 1. In 103.1 innings, he’s 12-2 with a 2.53 ERA with 109 strikeouts to 16 walks. B.J. Bailey follows him with a 13-0 record and a 2.08 ERA in 103.2 innings. Oh, and Bailey is also a finalist for Small College Baseball Player of the Year. To round out the rotation, the Spartans have another 12-2 hurler in John Luke Glanton with a 2.87 ERA in 91 innings. Also expect two-way player Luke Fikar to throw out of the bullpen with his team-leading 7 saves and 1.82 ERA.The Tampa offense is built on the same guy that does so well with the pitching staff, catcher and SSC Player of the Year Jhoander Irigoyen. Irigoyen is the lone player on the team with double digit home runs (11) and leads the team with 62 RBI. The Spartans also have Brayden Woodburn, who is hitting .375 and has been known to come up in big moments. HOW THE SPARTANS CAN WIN THE NATIONAL TITLETampa has won back-to-back National Championships. No team has won more National Championships in DII Baseball. They have the starting pitching staff to ride all the way to the title. The offense can come up in big moments. They have the experience and pedigree to do what no team has done before. No.7 seed Bentley There’s a first for everything, and the firsts are the storyline for Mike Hill’s Bentley Falcons who are 44-15. In their first NCAA Tournament appearance, they hosted for the first time, won a regional for the first time, hosted a super regional for the first time, and advanced to Cary for the first time. They’ll have the task of beating Tampa on Saturday, May 30th at 6 PM ET.The Bentley offense has some boppers. They rank sixth in DII with 96 home runs. Four players have 12+ home runs. Leading that power is Stan DeMartinis III with 23 home runs and 77 RBI to boot. Brendan Sencaj leads the team with 80 RBI and has 17 home runs of his own. Jared Berardino has 19 home runs with 59 RBI. Both Sencaj and Berardino have hit 3 homers each this postseason.

The Bentley rotation has been really good this postseason, and it’s Pat Heber leading the charge. In the postseason, he pitched to a 1.45 ERA over 15 innings. He’s 10-0 with a 3.70 ERA over 90 innings. Sam Belliveau is 10-2 with a 3.87 ERA over 86 innings. Zach Eigenbrod is 8-3 with a 4.32 ERA. HOW THE FALCONS CAN WIN THE NATIONAL TITLE As mentioned earlier, there’s always a first for everything. Why stop here? The Falcons have the offense to do it, they have the rotation to back it up for a deep run.

No.3 seed Catawba

Catawba has been on a mission since the conference tournament championship series loss to Wingate. Since, the Indians have been 5-1 with a +26 run differential. Overall on the season, Catawba is 47-12 with zero losing weekends in the regular season. Meaning, this team is extremely hard to beat twice. They’ll face off against Point Loma on Saturday, May 30th, at 1:30 PM ET.The offense is led by Brandon Crabtree, the SAC Player of the Year. He is mashing, hitting .429 with 23 doubles, 18 home runs, and 70 RBI. This team hits a lot of doubles and steals a lot of bases. The Indians have 142 doubles and 141 stolen bases on the season.Pitching wise, Casey Gouge is the ace. He’s 9-1 with a 3.63 ERA over 84.1 innings. The bullpen is led by Joe Burleyson, who over 38.2 innings (24 appearances) is 3-1 with a 2.09 ERA and 12 saves.

HOW THE INDIANS CAN WIN THE NATIONAL TITLE Catawba has been playing incredible postseason baseball under head coach Jim Gantt. His pedigree mixed with the rotation and backend of Joe Burleyson makes Catawba a tough team to beat twice and in a three-game set.

No.6 seed Point Loma It’s an even year, which means Point Loma made its way to Cary. The Sea Lions made it to the final 8 in both 2022 and 2024. As well, they swept both the PacWest Regular Season and Tournament Championships with a 49-11 record on the season. They’ll face off against Catawba on Saturday, May 30th, at 1:30 PM ET.Josiah Rodriguez leads the team on offense with a .417 average and a 14-game hitting streak. Tristan Moore is the power and run producing threat, hitting .388 with 17 homers and 77 RBI. Hank Smith is another guy worth mentioning, hitting .310 with 10 homers.Speaking of Smith, he’s also the teams’ backend option with nine saves over 31.1 innings and a 3.73 ERA. Devin Norton has been on a tear lately, going 6+ innings with 3 or fewer earned runs in his last seven starts. On the season, he’s 10-2 with a 2.35 ERA over 76.2 innings. Derek Silva also provides solid starting depth with an 11-1 record and a 3.41 ERA over 89.2 innings. HOW THE SEA LIONS CAN WIN THE NATIONAL TITLE

Like UT Tyler, Point Loma swept both the regular season and tournament championships. Their offense, anyone can come up big. Eight different guys have 30+ RBI on the season. Should the rotation produce and ease off the bullpen, Point Loma has the opportunity to hoist the trophy.
