G-MAC Baseball Tournament Preview

The Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Baseball Championship is taking over Prasco Park with a unique, high-stakes format. The field is split into two four-team, double-elimination pools. Teams have to survive their respective pods just to reach Saturday's ultimate winner-take-all championship game. In a format this grueling, depth is everything. You need arms to eat innings, and you need bats that don't go cold. Winner gets an automatic bid into the NCAA Midwest Regional. The first game begins Wednesday, May 6th at 12 PM ET. Here is how the field stacks up.

Pool B: The North Champs and the Underdogs

We have to start Pool B with the North Division Champion, the #1 Ashland Eagles. They are the undisputed kings of the mound this year, leading the entire G-MAC in team ERA (4.31), total strikeouts (445), and batting average against (.250). If that wasn't enough, they also lead the conference in power with 48 home runs. Ryan Shimek (.379 BA, 64 hits) and Collin Overholt (1.106 OPS, 19 2B, 8 HR) supply the daily fireworks at the plate, while staff ace Drew Becker (6-1, 2.97 ERA, 87 K over 63.2 IP) anchors that terrifying pitching rotation.

They draw #8 Ohio Dominican in Game 4. The Panthers have a massive mountain to climb, but they bring serious thump to the dish. Gavin Lawler (.391 BA, 1.344 OPS, 32 extra base hits) and Steven Chapman (.373 BA, 48 RBI) are a nightmare for opposing pitchers. If the Panthers can get run support, they have a great backend reliever in Andrew Holcomb (21.2 IP, 1.25 ERA, 31 K, 6 saves).

Game 3 features #4 Kentucky Wesleyan against #5 Cedarville. KWC leans heavily on the lumber of Liam Hutson (team-leading 1.011 OPS, 12 HR, 44 RBIs) and Rhett Dysholm (.339 BA) to back up workhorse Evan Oakley (4.17 ERA with 81 Ks over 77.2 innings). Cedarville counters with a pure hitting machine in Eli Henderson (.428 BA, 1.085 OPS) and Kaden Wilde (.363 BA, team-leading 12 stolen bases), while handing the ball to Jensen Wagoner (5-5, 4.14 ERA over 74 innings) to eat up innings and keep the Yellow Jackets out of the losers' bracket.

Pool A: Run Producers and Defending Champs

Over in Pool A, the #3 Findlay Oilers do two things better than anyone else in the G-MAC: drive in runs and steal bags. They lead the conference in both RBIs (323) and stolen bases (108). Luke Senften (.355 BA, 47 RBIs) and Casey Maruniak (.306, 17 2B, 56 RBI, 31 SB) are the engines of that relentless offense. Carson Mellott (6-3, 3.98 ERA in 61 IP) takes the bump to set the tone, while Colin Becker closes it out in the backend with 9 saves and a 2.50 ERA over 39.2 innings.

They get a brutal first-round draw in #6 Northwood, the defending tournament champions. The Timberwolves are battle-tested in May, rolling out premier slugger Caden Duryea (.368 BA, 15 2B, 11 HR) and Brendan Hammer (.354 BA). Lucas McKinney headlines the rotation with a 6-2 record and a 2.64 ERA over 58 innings.

Finally, we have the South Division Champions, the #2 Walsh Cavaliers. They are a deeply balanced, terrifying squad led by Brodey Acres (.395 BA, 1.195 OPS, 20 2B) and Mason Stoldt, who has launched an absurd 17 homers to go with 60 RBIs. Ryan Chambers (5-2 with a 3.84 ERA in 63.1 IP) fronts the rotation as they take on Hillsdale. The Hillsdale Chargers will rely on elite contact bats Gaard Swenson (.364 BA, 71 hits, 16 stolen bases) and Jake Figman (.344 BA) to apply constant pressure. On the mound, Hillsdale is handing the ball to Logan McLaughlin (3-3 with a 3.94 ERA over 61.2 innings) to try and spring the day-one upset, while the arm of Josh Novak (2.42 ERA, 5 saves over 17 appearances) will provide innings out of the bullpen with swingman Patrick MacLean (14 appearances, 3 starts, 2.62 ERA in 44.2 innings) may provide valuable innings in both a starter and relief role.

Whoever survives these pool-play battles will have truly earned their shot at the trophy on Saturday.
