The West Florida Argonauts entered the 2025 postseason as a battle-tested squad, finishing the year with a 36-21 overall record and a 22-11 mark in the Gulf South Conference. Under the steady hand of Mike Jeffcoat, now entering his 21st season with a career .601 winning percentage, the program reached its third straight NCAA Regional and advanced all the way to the South Super Regional. It was the third consecutive season the Argonauts surpassed the 35-win plateau, further cementing their status as a perennial powerhouse in the South Region. As the team transitions into 2026, they face the challenge of replacing a massive amount of production, as only 29.9% of the offense's plate appearances and a mere 9.6% of the pitching staff's innings return to Pensacola. Despite these departures, the internal expectations remain championship-level at Jim Spooner Field.
The Offense
The West Florida lineup will look significantly different this spring, yet it remains anchored by Alex Urias. The reigning GSC Freshman of the Year and Second Team All-GSC selection was a revelation last season, ranking 3rd in the conference in batting average. In 167 ABs, Urias hit .389 with 7 doubles and 27 RBI, while showing elite plate discipline with a conference-best 7% strikeout rate. Joining him as a primary returner is Tanner Taylor, who provided stability in the infield. In 114 ABs, Taylor hit .307 with 3 doubles and 18 RBI, and his ability to put the ball in play, evidenced by a 9% strikeout rate that ranked 6th in the GSC, will be vital for a team prioritizing athleticism.
To bolster the departing production, Mike Jeffcoat dipped into the portal for high-impact transfers. William Lybrook arrives as a graduate student from Harvard, bringing a veteran presence behind the plate after slashing .287/.371/.444 over three years in the Ivy League. On the dirt, the Argonauts added Andrew Walton from Southern Union CC, who put up eye-popping numbers last spring; in 127 ABs, Walton hit .386 with 11 doubles, 9 HR, and 36 RBI. Another Division I transfer, Greg Pettay by way of South Alabama, joins the mix after posting a .373 OBP last season, while Trent Kelly comes over from Jacksonville to compete for time in the infield.
The Pitching Staff
The mound presents the greatest area of reconstruction for the Argonauts, with nearly 90% of last year's innings vacated. Colton Dorsey stands as the most experienced returning arm. Last season, Dorsey posted a 1-0 record with a 2.83 ERA in 28.2 IP, and his 6.59 H/9 rate ranked 2nd in the conference among relievers, suggesting he is ready for a high-leverage role. He is joined by senior transfer Christian Pencek, a winner from Lincoln Memorial who compiled a 12-2 record across 115.2 IP during his time with the Railsplitters.
Depth will be the determining factor for this staff, and the Argonauts are high on Eli Roberts, a left-handed transfer from Flagler. Roberts was dominant last year, going 4-1 with a 2.56 ERA in 45.2 IP while striking out 50 batters compared to just 14 walks. The staff also welcomes freshman Tucker Ricks, a local standout from Pace HS who was rated as a top 150 pitcher in the state of Florida by Perfect Game.
Key Departures
The road to 2026 requires replacing several program icons. Dalton Neuschwander leaves a massive void at the front of the rotation after a season that saw him earn ABCA First Team All-South Region honors before being drafted in the 10th round by the Baltimore Orioles. Neuschwander went 9-4 with a 2.42 ERA in 81.2 IP, ranking 2nd in the GSC in both wins and ERA. The offense loses its primary catalyst in Brett Rowell, an All-Region and First Team All-GSC catcher who hit .355 with 14 doubles, 8 HR, and 52 RBI in 197 ABs. Other notable exits include All-Conference performers Jacob Heath (6-4, 3.89 ERA in 81.0 IP), Kade Manderscheid (5-3, 4.23 ERA in 72.1 IP), and shortstop Dom Presto, who hit 4 HR and 27 RBI last season.
Schedule & Outlook
The 2026 campaign kicks off with a heavyweight clash at home on January 30th as West Florida hosts Florida Southern for a three-game set. The Moccasins are coming off a strong 38-15-1 season where they served as a South Regional host, making this an immediate litmus test for the new-look Argonauts. February continues with a road trip to Rollins College, a team that finished 2025 with 29 wins and a .602 winning percentage.
As the calendar turns to conference play, a key series looms in late February against Delta State, the defending Gulf South Champions who earned a South Regional appearance last year. In March, the Argonauts will face UAH at home; though Alabama Huntsville struggled to a 20-28 record last year, they remain a regional rival. The schedule remains relentless into April, highlighted by a series against Mississippi College, a 35-win team and South Regional participant , and a regular-season finale against Valdosta State, who also made the GSC Tournament last season. With a balanced lineup and a refurbished pitching staff, the Argonauts have the depth to navigate this gauntlet and contend for a postseason run.
