Cameron Fall Report: Holden Capps Returns Home to Lead the Aggies

The Cameron Aggies enter a season of transition as they look to turn the page on a challenging 2025 campaign that saw the program finish with a 13-33 overall and conference record. Despite a tough end to the year with a seven-game losing streak, the program has reason for optimism with the homecoming of Holden Capps, who takes the reins for his first season as Head Coach. A Lawton native and former standout at Lawton High School, Capps returns to his roots after serving as an assistant at the Division I level with Long Island for the last three seasons. He inherits a squad searching for its first winning season since 2017 and playing at McCord Field, where the Cameron faithful are eager to see a revitalized brand of baseball. While the team returns 54.9% of its offensive production, a significant overhaul is underway on the mound, where only 12.9% of the pitching innings from last year return to the roster.

The Offense

The Aggies lineup will be anchored by Zane Roos, a senior who earned Second Team All-Lone Star honors last season and is expected to primarily occupy the designated hitter role. In 138 ABs hit .355 with 12 doubles, 10 HR and 45 RBI. Roos was a force in the conference last year, finishing the season ranked 7th in the Lone Star in OPS with a mark of 1.18.

Joining him in the veteran core is senior center fielder Wyatt Cunningham, a switch-hitter known for plus range and speed. In 138 ABs hit .312 with 4 doubles, 1 HR and 23 RBI. Cunningham provides a dynamic presence on the basepaths, having ranked 22nd in the conference with 10 stolen bases last season.

The infield features senior Diego Villarreal, another switch-hitter with significant adjustability at shortstop. In 151 ABs hit .272 with 9 doubles and 18 RBI.

To bolster the middle of the order, Coach Holden Capps brought in Daniel Yardley, a powerful right-handed transfer from JUCO UA Rich Mountain who is expected to provide great defense at first base. Senior newcomer Sutton Titsworth also joins the fold from Newman, bringing athleticism and experience to the outfield.

The Pitching Staff

With nearly 90% of the innings from last season needing to be replaced, the Cameron pitching staff will lean heavily on talented newcomers. Of all pitchers who threw 10+ innings from last year's team, only Ryan Kopp (25 innings over 12 appearances) returns.

The influx of new talent is headlined by Jaylen Cream, a junior transfer from JUCO Dallas College - Richland. Cream was highly effective last season, posting a 3-2 record with a 2.83 ERA in 41.1 IP. His unique delivery provides good ride on his fastball, and his high release height paired with a solid 12/6 breaking ball is expected to be a weapon in the Lone Star. Another key addition is Parker Jensen, a junior transfer from JUCO Highland - KS, who brings a physical presence to the mound. Jensen flashed swing-and-miss stuff last year, tallying 31 strikeouts in 33 innings. Reliever Cooper Weatherly could also see an expanded role after showing promise in his limited appearances, recording a 0-2 record with a 8.74 ERA in 11.1 IP while maintaining a solid 4.67 K/BB ratio.

Key Departures

The Aggies will have to replace the production and leadership of Josh Martinez, a right-handed pitcher who earned Third Team All-Lone Star honors. Martinez was a reliable arm for Cameron, finishing his tenure with a 4-1 record with a 4.17 ERA in 49.2 IP. The offense also loses Wilmer Henriquez, who played third base for the Aggies before transferring to Shorter. Henriquez was a consistent contributor at the plate, hitting .358 in 120 ABs with 7 doubles and 4 HR during his time in Lawton.

Schedule & Outlook

The 2026 season for Cameron officially begins at home at McCord Field on January 30th with a series against Texas A&M International. This opening matchup is a chance for revenge, as the Aggies dropped three of four to the Dustdevils in 2025. The schedule quickly ramps up in February with a road trip to visit Texas A&M University - Kingsville, a team that finished 2025 with a winning 27-25 record and an appearance in the Lone Star Tournament.

Key home series at McCord Field include a late February tilt against Eastern New Mexico, who posted a 27-23 record last year, and a mid-March visit from UT Tyler. UT Tyler represents one of the biggest challenges on the schedule, as they are coming off a 49-13 season and their first World Series appearance in Division II program history. April brings a crucial series against Oklahoma Christian before the Aggies close the regular season on the road against Angelo State. Angelo State was the class of the conference last year, finishing 48-10 as the Lone Star Champions and South Central Super Regional hosts. For Holden Capps and his squad, the path to a winning season involves navigating these regional heavyweights while establishing a new culture in Lawton.
