Frey's Focus - The Week in D2 Baseball (2/26 - 3/3)

Writer: Robert FreyRobert Frey

Another weekend of just simply great baseball. Check out our Top 25 rankings on our rankings page, as we make some major shakeups to the rankings.

It was the weekend where it seemed since I was away to watch games in-person, a LOT of other games over the weekend ended in walk-offs. I feel disappointed with not being able to clip every single one. So I apologize.

However, THANK YOU to all the programs that tagged the account, it made it a lot easier to post. We really appreciate it!

Without further adieu, here’s my thoughts on the four Regions (Central, South, South Central, West):

Stats and records are as of the morning of Tuesday, March 4, 2025.

CENTRAL REGION:

Winner #1:

No.18 Minnesota State (8-0, 8-0) played 8 games from Monday (2/24) to Sunday (3/2) and won all eight. It’s incredibly difficult to play 8 games in 7 games, but even more difficult to go 8-0 in that span. Matthew Fleischhacker led the charge on offense, going 13-28 in those games, leading the team with a .464 average. Ike Mezzenga also had 13 hits, as well as 4 HR and 13 RBI with a .433 average. Eight different players recorded at least 5 RBI in the last week.

Pitching wise, Nathan Culley returned from injury in 2023 and 11 shutout innings over 2 starts with 20 strikeouts. Louis Magers also didn’t allow a run over 10 innings and 2 starts. Mitch Gutknecht allowed just a single run over 2 appearances and 11 innings of work.

Hear our interview with head coach Matt Magers on the team’s hot start.

Winner #2:

RV Washburn (9-6, 5-1) and their bats were HOT this past week, as they went 4-0 with a midweek win over Winona State and a sweep of then-No.12 Missouri Southern. The guy at the forefront of the offense was none other than Cash Jay, whose 11-for-18 weekend with 3 home runs (including a walk-off) and 12 RBI raised his slash line to .346/.507/.635. Jett Buck also hit 3 roundtrippers over the week to put his HR total to five. Caleb Lunnon has done well on the bump, as he’s 2-0 with a 2.11 ERA over 21.1 IP.

Winner #3:

No.15 Harding (16-2, 8-1) jumped up 10 spots in our rankings after a 3-1 week after a midweek win against Arkansas Tech at home and a series win over Ouachita Baptist on the road. Maddox Long and Preston Tabor both dominated their starts, Long went 8 shutout innings and struck out 13 batters while Preston Tabor struck out 10 and gave up 1 hit over 6 innings in his appearance. Both Long (0.82) and Tabor (1.35) are both rocking ERAs under 1.5 over at least 25 innings. Collin Helms capped off a great week at the plate, going 9-for-15 with a homer and 5 RBI. Helms leads the team in average (.417) and RBI (20).

Other Winners:

No.3 Central Missouri (11-3, 5-1) had a week of battling back, beating Maryville in a midweek contest where they trailed 6-3 at one point in the game. They trailed 4-0 to Pitt State early in Game 1 of the series, before winning 11-6 and walked it off in extras off the bat of Chase Wilcox in Game 2 of the series. Jacob Steele bumped his average to .351 with a team leading 17 RBI after a 10-for-18 weekend with 6 RBI. Chase Wilcox went 7-for-14 in the series with the aforementioned walk-off double.

RV Central Oklahoma (13-4, 4-2) have now won 4 straight after a weekend sweep on the road at Emporia. Caden Robertson, what a series he had. He went 6-for-12 with 2 doubles, 3 homers, 8 runs, and 9 RBI. He leads the team with a .379 average, 7 long balls, and 22 driven in.

Fort Hays State (11-4, 6-0) took all three games this past weekend against Missouri Western, winning by the scores of 14-1 and 3-2 twice, the last coming off a walk-off fielder’s choice. FHSU is now off to a great 6-0 start in MIAA play and have won 7 games in a row. Ty Riley has the makings of an ace for this staff. He went a complete 7 innings of one-run ball with 9 strikeouts in their run-rule win. On the year, Riley is outstanding with a 4-0 record with a 1.29 ERA and a 0.71 WHIP across 28 innings this season. He[s also struck out 39 batters to just 5 walks. Cesar Saavedra got some opportunities for the Tigers, going 6-for-12 with a pair of RBI. He’s hitting .400 in 7 starts.

Henderson State (8-10, 4-5) had a great week, beating UAFS in a midweek affair before taking 2 of 3 against a then-ranked UAM team. Luke Farrar’s 6-for-16 week puts him atop the team in hitting with a .375 figure. Cole Rodriguez got a win in his start, going 5 innings of two-run ball with 5 strikeouts. Rodriguez leads the team with a 2.81 ERA over 25.2 IP.

Northwestern Oklahoma State (11-9, 3-6) capped off a 4-1 week with a midweek win against Rogers State and a sweep on the road at East Central before dropping a Monday game a Rogers State. Connor Green had 9 hits in the 5 games, raising his average to an impressive .419 figure. Hagen Barcello homered twice over the week with 5 RBI. He’s hitting .392 and leads the team with 27 RBI.

Oklahoma Baptist (11-6, 5-4) capped off a 3-1 week on the road, beating Southeastern Oklahoma State in a midweek game as well as beating Southwestern Oklahoma State in as series over the weekend. Two of those four games were run rules where the Bison score 17 or more runs. Every player with at least one at bat homered over the weekend, which shows you the power OBU had last week. The biggest beneficiary was Braden Smith, who homered four times with 10 RBI. We can’t forget about DJ Van Atten, who hit two home runs himself and is hitting a gaudy .429 on the season.

Rogers State (12-2, 3-0) dropped a midweek to NWOSU before sweeping Northeastern State in a home/road 3-game set and beat NWOSU in a Monday game to go 4-1 on the week. How about the performance of Andrew Ramirez and Jackson Romero? Ramirez (who’s hitting .404 on the year) went 9-for-17 with a pair of home runs and 8 RBI over the past week. Romero had 14 RBI over the weekend! Five of his eight hits over the week were 3 doubles and 2 home runs. Romero leads the team in RBI with 24 and slugging percentage with a .674 figure. Ky Decker dropped his ERA to 2.55 after going 6 shutout innings, allowing just one hit. He’s 3-0 on the young season.

SOUTH REGION:

Winner #1:

No.1 Tampa (14-2, 3-0) showed how dominant their pitching was, throwing 3 shutouts over the weekend. They have pitched 5 shutouts in their last 10 games. All three starters went 6+ innings, allowed 4 or fewer hits, and struck out 7 or more batters.

G1: Skylar Gonzalez (6 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 7 K)

G2: CJ Williams (7 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 10 K)

G3: Jake Stipp (7 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 8 K)

Gonzalez, the reigning D2 Pitcher of the Year, has a 1.55 ERA over 29 innings and continues to look the part of that crown here in 2025.

Another guy that has looked impressive is Jordan Williams, who’s hitting .444 and continues to climb up the record books for the Spartans with his 28 stolen bases in just 16 games. He is well on pace to shatter the school record of 52 set in 1982 and could break the all-time record of 97 should Tampa make a deep postseason run. Williams’ current pace would have him break the record of 97 in 56 games.

Winner #2:

Palm Beach Atlantic (10-4, 3-0) has ripped off 10 straight wins after starting 0-4 with a 4-0 week. The Sailfish defeated Barry in a midweek contest before traveling to Saint Leo to sweep them on the road. Matthew Faranda has been on a different level this season, leading the team in hitting at .469 and is tied for the team lead in RBI with 11. Finley Holmes hit a pair of dingers over the week and is now hitting .357. More importantly, their pitching staff has been lights out, posting a 2.86 ERA in these 14 games. It’s led by Dane Hall, who over two appearances over the week (1 start), Hall went 7.1 innings of 2-run ball with 9 strikeouts. He leads the team with a 1.16 ERA over 23.1 IP.

Winner #3:

RV Rollins (12-4, 5-1) got some votes for Top 25 after sweeping a then-RV Embry-Riddle on the road. It was a bit of dominance displayed, as all three games were won by at least 6 runs. Mason Wilson had a weekend, going 9-for-15 with a pair of HRs and 10 RBI. He’s putting up numbers, hitting .393 with 7 HR and 22 RBI. We also have to mention Jeslyn Whitehead. His 7-for-14 week puts his average up in the stratosphere, a .493 figure over 67 at-bats. The Tars only used 7 total pitchers over the weekend and of course it was led by Nick Berger, who allowed 2 hits without allowing an earned run over 8 innings in his win. He’s now 5-0 with a 1.45 ERA over 31 innings.

Other Winners:

No.6 Florida Southern (14-2, 5-1) took down Barry over the weekend with a 3-game sweep, jumping up 7 spots in our polls. In a competitive league like the Sunshine State Conference, it sure does help when you have THREE different players hitting above .400 on the season. Rohsean Riley (8-for-10 this past week) leads with an unbelievable .474 average. Mikey Scott (8-for-14) follows with a .426 average. Grant Thoroman (3-for-12) is hitting .410 on the season. It is incredibly tough to get Mocs hitters out, and it shows with their record.

Johan Sandoval had a trio of home runs over the weekend to put him in the team lead with 4 home runs. Chandler Hicks stole six bases and is a perfect 11-for-11 on the season.
